LA…in February

I am one of approximately 3000 people who go to Los Angeles in February every year to spend the weekend inside. President’s Day weekend is Gallifrey weekend. As an [almost] life-long Doctor Who fan, this is the Doctor Who event of the year.

Held at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott over President’s Day weekend, Gallifrey is the largest Doctor Who convention in the world (their words). It is packed full with guests, panels and costumes.

This year’s costume – Sarah Jane Smith from Time Warrior (season 11, episode 1 – SJS’s first episode!)

2013 is the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. Guests this year included Sylvester McCoy, Freema Agyeman, and Ben Browder. No Matt Smith, no David Tennant, but that is ok – this is not a con that I attend for the guests (that con will happen over the anniversary weekend in November) This con is, for me, about the socializing and costuming. Everyone there is there for Doctor Who.

The festivities start with Lobbycon on Thursday night in the hotel lobby. People mingle, drink, exchange ribbons and just have a good time in anticipation of a great con weekend. Panels and celebrity talks start on Friday and continue all weekend. Scheduled evening activities include karaoke on Friday and a Masquerade on Saturday. But the real fun is in walking the lobby and the hallways where people stop to see and be seen. The costuming is superb and the mood is fun - so much so that Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist films there over the weekend!
And then there are my friends who really make the con. We’re all spread out over the country, grown-ups leading busy grown-up lives. Con weekends are our time to have fun and relax. Breakfast at Denny’s, lunch at Champions (nachos!) and dinner wherever - it doesn’t matter. It’s sad when it all ends with Closing Ceremonies on Sunday and we fly home to our real lives on Monday. Until next year…and we hopefully do it all over again J

Leslie and Jackie - breakfast at Denny's!
